NRG (US) MET TOWER ARRIVES IN PORT OF MBS FOR WIND STUDY IN LAMU KENYA IN 2011

IMPACT OF THE PROJECT

The wind power plant in Lamu will help spark sustainable economic growth in one of Kenya’s marginalized regions.
Lamu’s poverty index is also among the highest in the country. The land area in Lamu county is 6,167 km.
At beginning of cordisons wind project study, The only available electric power service, was from generators that served government stations, touristic spots and a privileged few.

For the rest of Lamu inhabitants, there were no electricity. In addition to providing electricity for the region, the prospective wind power plant will create direct and off-shoot good paying jobs for this very rural and neglected population.

The stable income will in turn help stem rural-urban migration that is particularly rampant among the youth.
Finally, it is strongly anticipated that the project will spark other human development initiatives, including access to safe drinking water, health services, schools and infrastructure development. The projected infrastructure development will open the rural county of Lamu to a modern mark.

POWERING PLANNED INFRATRUCTURE

The proposed power plant will add a lot of value to the Kenya Government’s infrastructure programms in Lamu. Large projects are on course to economically develop the area around Lamu through the establishment of a port, an international airport, a railway station and an oil refinery. Currently Lamu is connected to the national grid from Kipevu Mombasa, initially the plan was to power these developments with thermal energy, diesel & generators. Cordisons proposed wind farm(s) would power these projects with clean renewable energy.
